About Julia

JuliaHi, I’m Julia B. Florentine (BA oxon, MRes, MPhil) and Glisten Training’s Director, Lead Trainer, and Executive Coach. I’m passionate about three things: communication, teaching, and cats. I have developed all our training programmes for professionals based on 10 years experience of communication training and active listening.

I first encountered active listening when I volunteered at Nightline, a student mental health helpline, while studying Psychology at Oxford University and later University College London (UCL). At Oxford and UCL, I studied experimental psychology, which I still use to evaluate recent communication research for my training and blog.

Upon graduation from UCL, I started my career as director of London Nightline, where I trained, managed, and supported helpline listening volunteers. At Nightline, I won the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Association’s Best New Initiative for establishing a Nightline’s first anonymous text-based listening service. I still volunteer as a policy consultant at the Nightline Association.

After Nightline, I worked in customer service and management, so I know what it’s like to deal with difficult customers and employees. More importantly, I how to keep them happy!

While I liked management,  my favourite part of my career was training others, and I realised how much active listening skills could benefit businesses. Many personal development training companies teach professional listening and communication, but nobody really specialises in it. That’s when I founded Glisten Training, which exclusively teaches professional listening and communication skills, based on my expertise from a decade at helplines.

I currently offer active listening coaching, give lectures, and personally lead all our training courses. Over the course of my career, I have trained hundreds of people in listening and communication skills in a variety of contexts.

My trainees find that learning to listen makes them better bosses, colleagues, and friends. Here are a couple things my recent trainees have said about my teaching:

In addition to me, Glisten Training has a number of engaging assistant trainers, who all also have years of helpline and training experience. Our assistant trainers help me to deliver training packages to larger groups in London, and bespoke courses for corporate clients across the UK.
